Air Band Chula Vista High SchoolAir Band is one of the most popular events to take place at any high school. It also happens to be an excellent means of fundraising, not to mention providing a great opportunity to let the community in on what is going on at the local high school. Air Band is time to get the “invisible kids,” involved in school activities while allowing them to shine in front of their community and peers.
The first step to planning a successful Air Band is deciding on a date, a theme, and the color scheme of the Air Band décor. Planning should take place at least three to five months in advance. This can sometimes be a tedious process but the end results are well worth it. Start off with choosing a date. Select a date without any major events around – all of ASB should be focused on Air Band. Once a date is selected it is time to focus on a theme. The theme selection is very important to the Air Band planning process. A theme should be fun and zany theme. Something that jumps out to people and encourage them to attend the event while still reflecting the event. This year’s Air Band theme was “Bananarama.” After the theme is chosen, Air Band is spread throughout the school and community. If Air Band is publicized correctly, you’ll know that Air Band will be a full house event. After the selection of a theme, it’s good to choose a color while in the state of mind. Our colors for “Bananarama” were yellow, green, and brown. When all the planning is done, it’s off to the real show.
THE FIRST MONTH – Within a week of planning Air Band an M.C. should be found. It is really important that you must have a backup M.C. just in case something goes wrong. It is highly recommended to write letters out to local celebrities to M.C. the evening of Air Band. Request a rapid response and when a response is received, use the M.C.’s name when dealing with publicity. Contact a DJ to host the dance after Air Band. This year we worked with our S.P.C.A. sound system to handle all tapes and sound the evening of Air Band. We then ordered decorations from party supply stores. The ASB decides how the gym will be decorated for the show. During this month the ASB is given a set of assignments. They are delegated to each position and are given deadlines to accomplish them. The first month is a month to know exactly the DJ, M.C., date, and decorations for the gym and school.
THE SECOND MONTH – During the second month all teachers should be informed of the details concerning Air Band and encouraged to try out. If you have a drama program on campus, an ASB representative should speak to the class on what Air Band is and how to get involved. That month the student body should be informed that Air Band is soon approaching. We publicize through teasers, posters and the display case. Sign up sheets are put in front of the ASB for all students interested to perform. An informational meeting should take place at the end of the week allowing students to get a more clear description of Air Band as well as upcoming dates. Letters are also distributed to selected faculty and staff for volunteer judges the night of. Not only do we ask staff members but we also include class presidents to see if they would be able to participate. We also have to find an entertaining group that will perform during the score calculations. This year we added extra categorical plaques. They were for voice synchronization, instrument synchronization, dance routine, appearance authenticity, song presentation, and crowd appeal. The top three winners receive trophies as well as their checks. These are ordered this month in time to receive it the week of Air Band. We hold auditions at the end of the month. They are held for three days after school. The second month major publicity and organizing performers should start.
THE THIRD MONTH – Dress rehearsals are held the week of Air Band. Now that we know the groups, the judges, M.C., and DJ we can start typing the programs. This final month is making sure everything is ready for the big night. We send out reminders to the M.C., DJ, and judges telling them Air Band is only in a few days. Good Luck Grams are also sent out to performers the day before.
